Practical travel and lodging information

  1. Accommodations:
We are blocking rooms in Holiday Inn Express, in New Jersey. The hotel is very close to Monika's parents. We will also provide transport between the hotel and wedding festivities on both days. The hotel is also across the street from a quick and direct bus to NYC (42nd Street and 8th Avenue). Also please consider a list of hotel accommodations near Columbia that are recommended by the University.

  2. Getting to Columbia University (St. Pauls' Chapel and Terrace in the Sky)

  3. Walk/cab: It is very easy to get a cab anywhere in Manhattan that is south of 125th Street
Subway/bus: Take the 1 (red) train to 116th Street or M104 bus to 116th Street.
Driving: From Amsterdam Ave. turn right (coming from the South) or left (coming from the North) onto 119th Street (one way). Terrace in the Sky is on the right, at the end of the short block. Complimentary valet parking (for Catholic ceremony and reception) starts at 12:30pm

  4. Getting to Ganesh Temple (NOTE: on a Sunday morning)

  5. Cab: Taking a cab to Queens could be a good option, considering how little traffic there is on Sunday morning (and how long the train and bus and walking take).
Hotel bus: There will be a bus between Holiday Inn and the Ganesh Temple.
Subway/bus/train:Take either 7 train (only local on weekends) to the last stop in Queens or take the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train to Flushing from Penn Station; then take Q27 bus (starts in Flushing) to the Temple
Driving:From North: Take exit 15 from Intestate 678 towards 20 Ave., turn right at Parsons Blvd (2 miles), turn right at 45th Ave (0.2 miles), turn left at Bowne St. (430 ft); From West: Take exit 23 from I-495E/Long Island Expressway to Main St, turn left onto Main St (0.6 miles), turn right at Elder Ave (0.3 miles), turn right at Kissena Blvd (449 ft), turn left at 45 Ave (0.2 miles), turn right at Bowne St (430 ft); NOTE: There is very very little traffic in NYC on Sunday morning.

Fun info about New York...

We love to roam around the City and our favorite places to be are

  • Central Park
  • Broadway (from Columbia down to Times Square)
  • 5th Ave. and Madison Ave. (between Central Park and Metropolitan Museum)
  • SoHo, especially Balthazaar's, Vosgues, MoMa Store, Rice to Riches pudding place, the little dosa eatery on the eastern edge of Spring Street and all the designer stores
  • Washington Square Park, the only thing that's better at NYU than Columbia :P
  • anywhere West Village
  • St. Mark's Place in East Village (8th Street between 2nd and 3rd Ave.)
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met), the American Wing (with all the cool antique furniture) and the Atrium right next to it

New York has obviously many great restaurants. Some of our favorites (both foodwise and pricewise) which we would recommend are:

  • Baluchi's chain, many restaurants throughout the city (best reasonably priced Indian food)
  • Rice to Riches (who knew rice pudding could be so good)
  • Dosa Hut (somewhere in the 28th/Lex. Indian area)
  • Pertutti, Broadway, bet. 114th and 113th street
  • Afgan Kebab House (few locations)
  • Turkish Cusine restaurant (46th Street and 9th Ave)
  • this small breakfast place around the corner from the easternmost edge of Spring Street
  • food court in Grand Central
  • Mamoon falafel in West Village
  • Polish restaurants in Greenpoint (Brooklyn)
